What to know about niger seeds
Niger seed leads a double life. In Ethiopia it is noug, the small black oilseed that makes up roughly half the national oilseed crop and supplies the everyday cooking oil behind a great deal of Orthodox fasting food, and in India it is ramtil. In Britain and North America the same seed is sold as nyjer, the thistle-looking birdseed that finches empty a feeder for. As a food it grades like other oilseeds: high in nickel, borderline for oxalate and for fermentability, and clean on histamine, gluten, lectins and salicylates. It is also an Asteraceae plant, which is the detail worth knowing if ragweed or mugwort season is hard on you.
Watch for
- High in nickel, in line with seeds generally.Whole noug seed used as a paste or ground into a sauce is a real nickel load, which is the grade most likely to matter if you are managing systemic nickel allergy
- Borderline for oxalate, so noug counts toward a daily oxalate budget alongside the other seeds if kidney stones are the concern
- Borderline for SIBO and not compliant with an AIP elimination, both for the usual seed reasons rather than anything specific to this plant
- Botanically Asteraceae, the same family as sunflower, ragweed, mugwort and chamomile.Documented human allergy to niger seed is rare, but if you already react across that family it is a reasonable one to introduce cautiously
- Nyjer sold for wild birds is heat-treated to stop it germinating and is not produced to food-grade standards. It is not the same product as noug bought from an Ethiopian grocer
