Sacha inchi is a star-shaped Amazonian vine seed sold as a plant omega-3 (ALA) protein snack. Two things make it worth logging. It is a documented emerging allergen in its own right, with published cases of rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma from handling and eating the seeds, and it is genuinely not safe raw: the raw seed carries alkaloids and saponins that roasting largely removes. On the trigger grades it is high in nickel (D), moderate on oxalate, and moderate on FODMAPs, so a big bag can also read as a gut problem rather than an allergy one.
Watch for
- Never eat sacha inchi raw.Traditional preparation is roasted for a reason: raw seeds contain alkaloids and saponins, roasting cuts them sharply, and raw seeds have been linked to nausea and vomiting. European regulators raised safety objections when the roasted seed was notified as a traditional food, so the caution is not folklore
- A real, if uncommon, allergen.Occupational allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma caused by sacha inchi seeds are documented in the medical literature, and because it is not on the major allergen labelling lists it hides inside protein powders and bars without a bold-type warning
- High in nickel (graded D), in line with other oil-rich seeds.Relevant if nickel-triggered eczema or dermatitis is on your list
- Moderate oxalate and moderate FODMAP content, the ordinary seed-sized problems.It is fermentable enough that a scoop of sacha inchi protein powder can produce bloating that gets blamed on the shake rather than the seed
