Ingredient notes

What to know about yellow mustard

Yellow mustard is one of the genuinely gentle condiments, which is why it is a favourite low FODMAP swap for garlicky, oniony sauces. Plain yellow mustard is just mustard seed, vinegar, salt and turmeric (that is where the bright colour comes from, not dye), and it tests low on FODMAPs and clean on gluten, lactose and nightshade. The one mild caveat is the vinegar and seed, which nudge it to borderline on histamine and nickel, so people who are strict on either should keep an eye on quantity rather than avoid it.

Watch for

  • Genuinely low FODMAP in normal serving sizes, which makes it a reliable stand-in for garlic and onion based condiments
  • Borderline histamine from the vinegar and borderline nickel from the mustard seed, only relevant if you are very strict on those
  • The yellow colour is turmeric, not artificial dye, so it is a cleaner label than it looks
