Why sulfites food checker matters
Sulfites are preservatives found in wine, dried fruits, and processed foods. They can trigger asthma symptoms, headaches, and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
- Dried fruits are often high in sulfites unless labeled 'unsulfured'
- Wine, especially white, commonly contains sulfites
- Fresh foods are naturally sulfite-free
- Check medication labels - some contain sulfites
- Look for 'contains sulfites' on labels (required above 10ppm)

What to know about red beans
The small red beans in red beans and rice are clean on histamine and gluten, but they are high in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and total FODMAPs, and they carry a lot of nickel. That combination is why red beans are a classic gas, bloating and cramping trigger for sensitive guts, and why they can flare a nickel allergy even after long simmering.
Watch for
- High in GOS, the fermentable fiber that gut bacteria turn into gas, so red beans commonly cause bloating and wind on a low FODMAP diet
- High nickel, which matters if you get pompholyx (dyshidrotic) hand eczema or systemic nickel allergy, since beans are one of the biggest dietary nickel sources
- Poor for SIBO, because that same GOS ferments high and fast in the small intestine
- Milder than red kidney beans on salicylate and oxalate, but the FODMAP and nickel load is just as high
