Matcha is high in caffeine, and the reason is simple: you whisk and drink the whole powdered green tea leaf instead of steeping it and pouring the leaf away, so one bowl can deliver as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. The caffeine is buffered by L-theanine, which softens the jitter but does not lower the dose.
