What to know about pecan butter

Pecan butter is nothing but ground pecans, so it inherits the two things that matter about the nut: it is a declared tree nut allergen, and it is graded high in nickel. The nickel grade is the one that surprises people, because pecan butter is otherwise the mildest of the common nut butters here. Oxalate and salicylate both land only moderate, which is a real point of difference from almond butter and tahini, and FODMAPs sit moderate by portion rather than high. If you are tracking systemic nickel allergy, though, a nut butter is a concentrated source and a tablespoon is several nuts.

Watch for

  • High in nickel.Nut butters are among the densest everyday nickel sources, and grinding means you eat more nuts per spoon than you would whole
  • A tree nut allergen.Pecan must be declared on labels, and pecan butter is routinely ground on shared equipment with walnut, cashew and almond, so cross contact is a genuine question
  • Moderate rather than high on oxalate, which makes it a gentler choice than almond or sesame butter if kidney stones are your concern, but it is not a zero-oxalate food
  • Moderate FODMAP by volume.A thin scrape is usually fine and a loaded spoonful straight from the jar is where symptoms start
  • Check the jar for additions.Palm oil, salt, maple syrup and cinnamon all turn up in commercial pecan butter and each brings its own trigger profile
