What to know about areca nuts
Areca nut, sold almost everywhere as betel nut or supari, is not a borderline food trigger. It is a Group 1 human carcinogen: the IARC classifies the nut itself as carcinogenic to humans even when it is chewed on its own with no tobacco added, and it is one of the most widely used psychoactive substances on earth. The buzz is not caffeine, it is arecoline, an alkaloid that acts on muscarinic receptors and produces the flush, the sweating and the racing heart. Areca grades worst possible for inflammation and it is the food most likely to end up on this journal for reasons that have nothing to do with a sensitive gut.
Watch for
- Classified by the IARC as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), and that verdict holds for the plain nut, not just for betel quid mixed with tobacco. It is causally linked to oral, pharyngeal and oesophageal cancer
- Causes oral submucous fibrosis, a precancerous stiffening of the mouth lining. The early signs are a burning mouth, loss of taste, tightening cheeks and a jaw that will not open as wide as it used to, and it does not reverse on its own
- Graded worst possible for inflammation.Arecoline drives collagen deposition and chronic inflammatory change in the oral mucosa, which is the mechanism behind the fibrosis rather than a side effect of it
- Arecoline is a muscarinic agonist, so acute effects include flushing, heavy salivation, sweating, palpitations and dizziness. That same pharmacology is why areca chewing is linked to worsening asthma control
- Regular chewing carries an established dependence and withdrawal pattern, and long-term use is associated with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- On the ordinary food-trigger axes it is also high in nickel and high in lectins, borderline for salicylates, oxalate and SIBO, but none of that is the reason to log it
