Sensitivity notes

Why fodmaps food checker matters

FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive distress in sensitive individuals. They include fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans, and polyols. These sugars are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and ferment in the colon, potentially causing bloating, gas, and discomfort.

  • Start with a 2-6 week elimination phase, removing all high-FODMAP foods
  • Keep a detailed food and symptom diary to track your reactions
  • Reintroduce one FODMAP group at a time to identify your specific triggers

Serving size, prep, and portion notes for beef protein

Beef protein is the powder people reach for precisely because whey failed them, and on the dairy front it delivers: no milk protein, no lactose, no FODMAPs at all. The catch is how it is made. Most tubs are hydrolyzed, and many are built from collagen rather than muscle, which is why this row grades high on glutamates (D) and moderate on histamine (C) and tyramine (C). Breaking a protein into fragments frees exactly the amino acids that biogenic amines and free glutamate come from, so a shake can carry a load that a fresh steak never would. It stays friendly where whey is not: fine for a paleo pattern, outside the six foods dropped for EoE, and clean on gluten, sulfites, nickel and every FODMAP group.

Watch for

High free glutamate (D). Hydrolyzed proteins are the classic hidden glutamate source, which is why products containing them cannot legally claim "no MSG". If glutamate is one of your triggers, this is the grade that matters. / Moderate histamine (C) and tyramine (C), a step above fresh beef. The hydrolysis that makes it mixable also frees the building blocks of biogenic amines, and low tyramine diets for MAOI medication explicitly exclude powdered protein supplements. / Many "beef protein" tubs are hydrolyzed collagen rather than muscle meat. A label with very high glycine and low leucine is the tell, and collagen is also where the mild oxalate grade (B) comes from. / Some "beef blend" products quietly cut in whey. If you are here to avoid dairy, read the ingredient list every time. / Not vegan or vegetarian, and flavoured versions can add sweeteners or polyols the plain grades do not price in.

If you're sensitive to FODMAPs, consider these strategies:

  • 1Start with a 2-6 week elimination phase, removing all high-FODMAP foods
  • 2Keep a detailed food and symptom diary to track your reactions
  • 3Reintroduce one FODMAP group at a time to identify your specific triggers
  • 4Remember that threshold varies - you may tolerate small amounts
  • 5Work with a dietitian trained in the low-FODMAP diet for best results
