What to know about jackfruit
Jackfruit is really two foods wearing one name, and the trigger question changes depending on which one is in the tin. Unripe green jackfruit is bland and stringy, shreds like pulled pork and is the version behind every vegan taco. Ripe jackfruit is startlingly sweet and perfumed, closer to banana crossed with pineapple. Our grades cover the fruit at C for total FODMAPs and C for polyols, with B for fructans, B for GOS and B for excess fructose, so it is a portion-sensitive fruit rather than a clean one, and C for SIBO fermentability. It is clean on histamine content, mild on liberation, salicylate and oxalate. The one allergy note that is genuinely worth knowing is cross-reactivity: jackfruit anaphylaxis has been reported in people allergic to natural rubber latex and in people with birch pollen food allergy syndrome.
Watch for
- Total FODMAPs C with polyols C.This is a fruit where the serving size decides the outcome, and where a plate built entirely from shredded jackfruit is a very different dose from a garnish.
- Graded C for SIBO fermentability, so it is one to be careful with during a SIBO protocol even though it looks like a plain vegetable on the plate.
- Reported cross-reactivity.Case reports describe anaphylaxis to jackfruit in a latex-allergic patient and in patients with birch pollen related food allergy, where jackfruit carries a Bet v 1 style allergen. If you get an itchy mouth from apple, hazelnut or cherry, or you react to latex gloves, treat your first jackfruit cautiously.
- Ripe and unripe are not interchangeable.Tinned in brine or water means the savoury green fruit and brings sodium with it. Tinned in syrup means the sweet ripe fruit, which stacks added sugar on top of an already fructose-bearing fruit.
- It is a meat substitute in texture only.Jackfruit is around two grams of protein per hundred grams, so a jackfruit taco is a carbohydrate dish, not a protein one, however convincingly it pulls apart.
