What to know about argan oil
Culinary argan oil is pressed from roasted kernels of Argania spinosa, a Moroccan tree in the Sapotaceae family, and on the trigger columns it is close to spotless: A for histamine, salicylates, oxalate, tyramine, sulfites, free glutamate, gluten, lactose and every FODMAP subgroup, with only a mild B for nickel and no rating either way on histamine liberation. The question people actually search is the allergy one, and it has a real answer. Argan is botanically nowhere near walnut or cashew, so it is not covered by the tree nut lists used for allergen labelling, but the kernel is protein rich, the oil is unrefined by definition, and there are published reports of anaphylaxis after eating it, anaphylaxis after putting it on skin, and contact dermatitis including one case in an infant. Its proteins have also shown laboratory cross-reactivity with hazelnut storage proteins.
Watch for
- Not a labelled tree nut, which cuts both ways.Argan will not usually appear on an allergen warning line, yet documented reactions to it include anaphylaxis from ingestion and from cosmetic use, and its seed proteins cross-react in vitro with hazelnut 11S globulin and vicilin. If you are hazelnut allergic, a bottle of argan is not automatically neutral ground
- Cold pressing is the whole point of a culinary argan, which is what keeps protein in the bottle. The reassurance you may have read about highly refined nut and seed oils being tolerated is about the refining step, and an aromatic roasted argan has deliberately skipped it
- Amlou, the classic way argan is eaten at a Moroccan breakfast, is argan blended with almonds and honey. That turns a clean oil into a serving of almonds (graded E for oxalate, D for nickel, D for salicylate) plus honey, so log the amlou, not the oil
- Nickel grades a mild B, the only non-A trigger mark on the row.It only matters if you are managing systemic nickel allergy tightly, and it is well below the D that most whole nuts carry
- Cosmetic-grade argan is a different product from food-grade.Cosmetic oil is pressed from unroasted kernels, is often solvent extracted or deodorised, and is not bottled to be eaten. Buy an oil that says culinary or alimentaire and smells strongly of toasted nut
