What to know about goat milk and dairy
Goat milk gets recommended constantly as the fix for a cow milk problem, and on the two questions people actually mean, it is mostly the wrong answer. Goat and sheep caseins are close relatives of cow casein, so the great majority of people with a true cow milk protein allergy, commonly cited as more than nine in ten, react to goat dairy as well. That is a real clinical caution, not a preference. Goat milk is also graded very high for lactose, only slightly under cow milk, so it does not solve lactose intolerance either, and it is graded high FODMAP and poor for SIBO on the back of that same lactose load. What is genuinely true about goat milk is narrower. Its fat globules are smaller, it forms a softer curd in the stomach, and its casein profile is the A2 type rather than the A1 beta casein common in commercial cow milk. That is where the easier to digest reputation comes from, and it is a comfort question, not an allergy or lactose one.
Watch for
- Very high lactose, close to cow milk.Switching herds does not fix lactose intolerance
- High dairy protein with strong cross-reactivity to cow casein. Most people with diagnosed cow milk protein allergy also react to goat and sheep dairy, so this is not a substitution to make on your own
- Graded high FODMAP and poor for SIBO, both driven by the lactose rather than by fructans
- Clean on the amine side as fresh milk: low histamine and low tyramine.Goat yogurt, kefir and aged goat cheeses do not inherit that, since fermentation and ripening raise both
- Plain goat milk is not a stand-alone infant substitute for formula, whatever the cow milk situation is
