What to know about relish
Relish is a broad category of chopped, pickled or cooked vegetables in a tangy vinegar base, and most jarred versions are built on onion, which makes them high FODMAP. Fructans are graded D, so relish is a frequent gut trigger, and because the vegetables are pickled or fermented it also carries moderate histamine and tyramine. If it is specifically cucumber based, see our pickle relish page for the detail.
Watch for
- High in fructans (grade D), usually from onion and other alliums in the mix, so most relishes are not low FODMAP
- Moderate histamine and tyramine because the vegetables are pickled or fermented, a factor if amines set you off
- Vinegar and salt heavy, which is why relish also scores poorly for the DASH and Mediterranean patterns
