Sensitivity notes

Why nitrites food checker matters

Nitrites are preservatives commonly used in cured meats. Some people are sensitive to them, experiencing headaches, flushing, or other symptoms after consumption.

  • Choose uncured or 'no nitrates/nitrites added' meat products
  • Note that 'natural' nitrites from celery powder act the same way
  • Fresh meat is nitrite-free

Serving size, prep, and portion notes for flax milk

Flax milk is water plus cold-pressed flax oil or finely ground flaxseed, which makes it dairy-free, nut-free and soy-free in one shot. That is the entire reason the category exists, and it is why people arrive here after almond, soy and oat milk have each caused trouble. It grades A on lactose and dairy protein, A on nightshades, caffeine, tyramine and nitrites, and only mild (B) marks on histamine, nickel and oxalate. The honest caveats are nutritional and industrial rather than chemical: unfortified flax milk is nearly protein-free, and the packaged product picks up borderline (C) grades on gluten, sulfites, salicylates, fructans and polyols that track what else went into the carton rather than the seed.

Watch for

Close to zero protein unless the carton says fortified. Flax milk built from pressed oil and water is a fat and fibre drink that pours like milk without replacing it, which matters if it is standing in for dairy in a child or in an already restricted diet / Graded borderline (C) on gluten even though flaxseed has none. That reflects blended cartons and shared production lines, so read the label rather than the ingredient name if you are coeliac / Borderline (C) on fructans and polyols, which is a sweetened-carton problem. Chicory root fibre, inulin and sugar alcohols show up even in versions that do not taste sweet / Borderline (C) on sulfites and salicylates and mild (B) on histamine, so if plain ground flaxseed sits fine and the milk does not, suspect the gums, stabilisers and added flavourings before the flax / Total FODMAP content is unrated in our data, so during an elimination phase treat a full glass as untested rather than assuming it is safe
