Serving size, prep, and portion notes for caraway seed
Caraway seed is one of the genuinely quiet spices in a trigger journal: it grades clean on histamine, histamine liberation, salicylates, oxalate, nickel, sulfites, free glutamate and every FODMAP group. If caraway seems to set you off, look at what it arrived in rather than at the seed. Caraway lives almost entirely in rye bread, sauerkraut, goulash and caraway-studded cheeses, and each of those has its own loud trigger (gluten and fructans in rye, fermentation histamine in sauerkraut, aged-cheese histamine and tyramine). The other thing worth knowing is that caraway is not cumin. They are different plants that happen to look alike in a jar, and the carvone in caraway is what gives rye bread its flavour, not anything cumin does.
Watch for
Clean across the whole food-chemistry panel here (histamine, liberator, salicylate, oxalate, FODMAPs, nickel, sulfite, glutamate and tyramine all graded A), so a caraway entry in your diary is rarely the culprit on its own / Rye bread and sauerkraut are where most people actually meet caraway, and both carry heavy triggers of their own: rye brings gluten plus fructans, and sauerkraut is fermented and high in histamine. Log the bread or the kraut, not just the spice / Caraway sits in the Apiaceae family alongside celery, carrot, fennel, coriander and dill. True IgE allergy to these spices clusters with birch and mugwort pollen sensitivity, and that is a separate mechanism from any of the grades on this page / Not the same plant as cumin, despite the shared look and the shared shelf. Buying or logging one as the other quietly corrupts your data, since cumin is used by the teaspoon in curries while caraway shows up in bread and cabbage dishes / Seed spices are excluded on the autoimmune protocol, so caraway is out during a strict AIP elimination even though it carries no chemical trigger
