Sensitivity notes

Why fodmaps food checker matters

FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive distress in sensitive individuals. They include fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans, and polyols. These sugars are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and ferment in the colon, potentially causing bloating, gas, and discomfort.

  • Start with a 2-6 week elimination phase, removing all high-FODMAP foods
  • Keep a detailed food and symptom diary to track your reactions
  • Reintroduce one FODMAP group at a time to identify your specific triggers
  • Remember that threshold varies - you may tolerate small amounts
  • Work with a dietitian trained in the low-FODMAP diet for best results

What to know about sarsaparilla

Sarsaparilla is tracked here as the drink rather than the botanical, and the drink is a sweetened soda: high FODMAP overall (E), driven by excess fructose (E) from cane sugar or corn syrup, and rated poorly (E) for SIBO. The root it is named after, a tropical Smilax vine, contributes very little to a modern bottle. Most sarsaparilla sold today is flavoured with vanilla, wintergreen, birch, licorice and artificial aromatics, partly because the sassafras that once carried that old fashioned root flavour was removed from the food supply when the FDA banned safrole as a food additive in 1960. If sarsaparilla or root beer reliably bloats you, the sugar is the near certain culprit, not the herbs on the label.

Watch for

  • Excess fructose grades E: a regular bottle delivers a fructose load in minutes, and in anyone with fructose malabsorption that means gas, cramping or loose stool an hour or two later
  • High FODMAP (E) and poor for SIBO (E).Carbonation compounds it by adding gas on top of the fermentation, which is why a fizzy sweet drink feels worse than the same sugar eaten as food
  • Salicylate sits at C, and that one really is from the flavouring.Wintergreen and birch notes, the signature of the sarsaparilla and root beer family, come from methyl salicylate
  • Sulfites and free glutamates both grade B and are brand dependent, so craft and imported bottles vary far more than mass market ones.Diet and zero sugar versions trade fructose for polyol or artificial sweeteners, which can produce the same bloating by a different route
  • The genuine upside versus cola: caffeine free (A) and clean on histamine, nickel and nitrites

FODMAPs Guide

Everything you need to know about fodmaps sensitivity and smart food choices.

Sensitivity varies widely. What triggers one person may be fine for another. Track your reactions to find your personal threshold.
