Sensitivity notes

Why fodmaps food checker matters

FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive distress in sensitive individuals. They include fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans, and polyols. These sugars are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and ferment in the colon, potentially causing bloating, gas, and discomfort.

  • Start with a 2-6 week elimination phase, removing all high-FODMAP foods
  • Keep a detailed food and symptom diary to track your reactions
  • Reintroduce one FODMAP group at a time to identify your specific triggers
  • Remember that threshold varies - you may tolerate small amounts
  • Work with a dietitian trained in the low-FODMAP diet for best results

What to know about earl grey tea

Earl Grey is ordinary black tea scented with bergamot oil, so it carries the same moderate caffeine load as any breakfast blend and the same mild histamine and tyramine ratings. What makes it its own question is the bergamot: it is a citrus rind oil, it contains a furanocoumarin called bergapten, and it is behind the one famous case of someone genuinely making themselves ill on tea. In our data the oil does not push salicylates past mild, so if Earl Grey bothers you and plain black tea does not, the aroma compounds are the more likely culprit than any of the usual food chemicals.

Watch for

  • Bergamot oil is the variable ingredient here: brands differ enormously in how heavily they scent the leaf, and a strongly perfumed Earl Grey is a different exposure from a lightly scented one
  • The Lancet published a case in 2002 of a man drinking up to four litres of Earl Grey a day who developed spreading muscle cramps, blamed on bergapten interfering with potassium channels. His symptoms cleared within a week of going back to plain black tea. Four litres a day is the point, not a normal cup
  • Moderate caffeine from the black tea base, unchanged by the flavouring, so it is no gentler than breakfast tea on that front
  • Rated mild on salicylates, histamine and histamine liberation, meaning the bergamot does not make it a high-chemical drink despite being a citrus product
