Serving size, prep, and portion notes for cranberry juice

Cranberry juice is one of the quieter entries in a drinks column: it grades clean on histamine, histamine liberation, gluten, lactose, oxalate, nickel, sulfites and tyramine, and only borderline on FODMAPs and excess fructose. The variable that decides how you react is which bottle you actually bought. Most supermarket cranberry juice is a sweetened cocktail padded out with apple or grape juice, while unsweetened pure juice is punishingly tart and carries a fraction of the sugar.

Watch for

Borderline on excess fructose and on overall FODMAPs. One small glass is rarely the problem, but juice is easy to drink in volume and the load stacks quickly / Cranberry cocktail is mostly not cranberry. Check the percentage on the label, because the filler is normally apple or grape juice and both carry a considerably heavier fructose load than cranberry does / Borderline on the inflammatory scale and a middling fit for DASH and Mediterranean patterns. That grade is the added sugar rather than the fruit / Whole cranberries grade high in salicylates in our data even though the juice does not. If salicylates are a confirmed trigger for you, treat cranberry juice as untested rather than proven safe and start with a small glass
