Sensitivity notes

Why nitrites food checker matters

Nitrites are preservatives commonly used in cured meats. Some people are sensitive to them, experiencing headaches, flushing, or other symptoms after consumption.

  • Choose uncured or 'no nitrates/nitrites added' meat products
  • Note that 'natural' nitrites from celery powder act the same way
  • Fresh meat is nitrite-free
  • Bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats are common sources
  • Vegetables like celery and beets contain natural nitrates

What to know about poppy seed oil

Poppy seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy, and the question everyone actually arrives with is whether that matters. It largely does not: the opiate alkaloids associated with poppy seeds are surface contamination from the plant latex rather than components of the seed or its oil, and pressing does not carry them across in meaningful amounts. What the oil is, is a delicate, nutty finishing oil traditional in northern France as huile doeillette, with a high linoleic acid content and a corresponding tendency to go rancid.

Watch for

  • Graded moderate on salicylate and oxalate and mild on nickel, glutamate and SIBO fermentation. As with other pressed seed oils, these sit well below the whole seed because most of the load stays in the press cake.
  • The drug test question belongs to the seeds, not the oil.Whole poppy seeds can carry morphine and codeine on their surface from harvest contamination and have caused positive opiate screens; pressed oil is not a recognised cause.
  • It is high in polyunsaturated fat and oxidises readily.Keep it refrigerated, buy small bottles and treat rancidity as the most likely thing to go wrong with it.
  • Low smoke point. This is a dressing and finishing oil, not a frying oil.
  • Poppy seed allergy is uncommon but real and can be significant, and it has documented cross reactivity with other seeds and with some nuts.An unrefined oil carries residual protein.
