What to know about camel
Camel meat and camel milk get discussed as though they were one food, and they are not. This entry grades the meat, and the meat is about as quiet as an ingredient gets: A on histamine, histamine liberation, tyramine, salicylate, oxalate, every FODMAP group, gluten, lactose, nickel, sulfites, nitrites and free glutamate, and it holds a clean inflammation grade too because it is so much leaner than beef or lamb. Camel is still the meat of a non-primate mammal, so alpha-gal syndrome includes it. The claims that actually need pushing back on belong to the milk, which is marketed as lactose free and as safe in cow milk allergy, and is neither.
Watch for
- Camel milk is not lactose free.It runs about 4.4% lactose, marginally below cow milk and nowhere near a lactose-free product, so it does nothing for lactose intolerance no matter how the bottle is labelled
- Camel milk is genuinely different in its proteins: it has no beta-lactoglobulin and no A1 beta-casein, which is where the hypoallergenic marketing comes from.Cross-reactivity with cow milk caseins has still been reported, so a diagnosed cow milk allergy is not something to test against camel milk at home
- Raw camel milk is the one to refuse outright.Dromedaries are the animal reservoir for MERS-CoV, and health advice in affected regions is to avoid unpasteurised camel milk and undercooked camel meat
- Alpha-gal catches people specifically on camel, because camel is so often the meat someone reaches for once they have already given up beef.It is a mammal, so it is not the escape route it looks like
