What to know about matcha

Matcha is high in caffeine, and the reason is simple: you whisk and drink the whole powdered green tea leaf instead of steeping it and pouring the leaf away, so one bowl can deliver as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. The caffeine is buffered by L-theanine, which softens the jitter but does not lower the dose. Beyond caffeine it is moderate in salicylates, mildly high in histamine and oxalate, and strongly anti-inflammatory. This is the plain powder: the separate matcha latte page covers the milk (lactose and dairy) side.

Watch for

  • High in caffeine because you consume the entire ground leaf, so a serving can rival brewed coffee and set off palpitations, anxiety or poor sleep
  • Moderate in salicylates, a factor if you react to aspirin or other salicylate-rich foods and drinks
  • Mildly high in histamine and oxalate, usually only an issue at large daily volumes
  • L-theanine smooths the caffeine curve but does not reduce the caffeine load itself
