What to know about apple juice

Apple juice is one of the most reliable FODMAP triggers there is. Juicing strips out the fibre and concentrates the sugars, so you get a big hit of excess fructose plus sorbitol with nothing to slow it down. It is a very common cause of bloating, gas and diarrhoea, and in young children it is a well-known reason for loose stools, sometimes called toddler’s diarrhoea.

Watch for

  • Very high in excess fructose, with more fructose than glucose, which the small intestine absorbs poorly and which pulls water into the gut
  • Also high in sorbitol, so it hits two FODMAP pathways at once and is far harder to tolerate than a whole apple
  • No fibre left to buffer the sugar load, making it a poor choice for SIBO and for low-FODMAP or DASH eating
  • Commercial apple juice can contain added sulfites as a preservative, a separate trigger for sulfite-sensitive people
