About Isomalt
Isomalt (E953) starts life as ordinary table sugar.
Manufacturers split the sucrose enzymatically and hydrogenate the halves, ending up with a roughly equal mix of two disaccharide alcohols. That structure is exactly why pastry chefs prize it: isomalt barely picks up moisture from the air and resists recrystallising, so pulled and blown sugar showpieces stay glassy for days and hard candy stays clear instead of going sticky. It is also why our data grades it high FODMAP and high polyol. Human digestive enzymes cannot cleave the hydrogenated bond, so most of a dose walks straight into the colon. Everything else on this page is clean: no gluten, no lactose, no dairy protein, no histamine, no salicylates, no oxalate.

What trips people up
- Graded high on FODMAPs and polyols. Isomalt is largely indigestible by design, which is the point for calorie labelling and the problem for your gut.
- Sugar-free hard candy, mints, lozenges and cough drops are the usual dose, and they are deceptively easy to overshoot because each piece looks trivial.
- EU labelling requires a warning that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects on any food containing more than 10 percent polyols. A sugar-free boiled sweet is often almost entirely polyol.
- Graded poorly for SIBO fermentation, since anything that reaches the lower gut intact is substrate for bacteria that should not be there.
- Oral bacteria cannot ferment isomalt, which is why it is sold as tooth-friendly and carries a genuine dental claim. That tells you nothing about how the rest of your digestive tract will handle it.

Common questions about Isomalt
Is isomalt low FODMAP?
No. Isomalt is graded high on both FODMAPs and polyols. It is a sugar alcohol that human enzymes cannot break down, so it passes into the colon where it pulls in water and ferments. It should be avoided during a low FODMAP elimination phase.
Why do sugar-free mints and hard candy upset my stomach?
Because the sweetener doing the bulking is almost always a polyol, and isomalt is one of the most common in hard confectionery. A few sweets can add up to several grams of unabsorbed sugar alcohol, which is enough to cause osmotic bloating, wind and loose stools in people with no diagnosed gut condition at all.
Is isomalt the same as maltitol?
No, though they behave similarly. Maltitol is hydrogenated maltose, derived from starch, and it is noticeably sweeter. Isomalt is made from sucrose in two steps and is only about half as sweet as sugar, but it is far more heat and humidity stable, which is why it dominates sugar sculpture and hard candy. Both are polyols and both carry the same laxative warning at high intakes.
How much isomalt is too much?
There is no universal number, and tolerance varies a lot between people. The EU sets its labelling trigger at 10 percent polyol content by weight rather than a dose, which is a useful signal that confectionery-scale portions are where problems start. If you are tracking symptoms, log the number of sweets rather than the brand: the dose response is usually obvious within a few entries.
