Overview

About Ranch dressing

Ranch dressing has two separate FODMAP and dairy problems.

The buttermilk and sour cream base makes it moderate-to-high in dairy protein with some lactose, and the garlic and onion powder that define the flavour make it high in fructans. Garlic and onion are among the most concentrated fructan sources there are, and a poured dressing hides a surprising amount of both, which is why ranch is a classic cause of bloating and gas even in small amounts. Unlike caesar, whose story is aged cheese and anchovy, ranch is really about buttermilk plus garlic and onion powder.

How Ranch dressing scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in fructans from garlic and onion powder, a leading cause of bloating, gas and cramping on a low-FODMAP diet and easy to underestimate in a poured dressing
  • Moderate-to-high in dairy protein with some lactose from the buttermilk and sour cream base, a second trigger stacked on the garlic and onion
  • Garlic and onion powder are concentrated, so even a couple of tablespoons can deliver a meaningful fructan dose
  • Bottled versions often add glutamates and sulfites for flavour and shelf life

FAQ

Common questions about Ranch dressing

Why does ranch dressing make me bloated?

The garlic and onion powder. Both are extremely high in fructans, a FODMAP that ferments in the gut and produces gas. A dressing concentrates them, so even a small pour can deliver enough to cause bloating, gas and cramping if you are sensitive to garlic and onion.

Is ranch dressing low FODMAP?

No. It is high in fructans from garlic and onion powder and adds lactose from the buttermilk base. A garlic-free and onion-free dressing, or a simple oil and vinegar, is the low-FODMAP alternative.

Is ranch dressing dairy-free?

No. Traditional ranch is built on buttermilk, sour cream or mayonnaise, so it contains dairy protein and some lactose. If dairy is your trigger, ranch is not a safe choice even setting aside the garlic and onion.
