Caffeine: the hidden sources beyond coffee
Coffee is the obvious one. The rest of your caffeine is easier to lose track of than you'd think.
If caffeine affects you - jitters, a racing heart, broken sleep, anxiety - the natural move is to cut back on coffee. But people often cut the coffee and still feel wired, and the reason is simple: coffee is only part of the picture.
Caffeine is dose-dependent, and what matters is your total across the day. Here are the sources that quietly add to it.
Caffeine is a load you accumulate
Caffeine works by blocking adenosine - the neurotransmitter that builds up through the day and makes you feel sleepy - which is what produces alertness, and, past a point, jitteriness, a faster heart and disrupted sleep.1
The key thing is that this is cumulative. Your body clears caffeine slowly - it has a long half-life - so a morning coffee, an afternoon tea and an evening square of dark chocolate all stack into one running total.1 Sensitivity to that total varies a lot between people.2 (More on that in caffeine sensitivity explained.)

The big one people miss is tea. All true tea - black, green, oolong, white, pu-erh, chai, matcha - comes from the same caffeinated plant, and matcha, being whole powdered leaf, is especially concentrated. Yerba mate is caffeinated too. So is cola, and so is chocolate - dark chocolate and cocoa most of all, because caffeine rides along with the cocoa solids.
A couple of things this list can't show: decaf coffee and tea still contain a small amount of caffeine, not zero - and energy drinks and many soft drinks add it directly.
