Nightshade intolerance: fact vs fiction

Tomatoes, potatoes and peppers have a bad reputation online. Here's what the evidence actually supports.

Few food groups have a worse online reputation than nightshades. Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and aubergine stand accused of fuelling inflammation, worsening arthritis, and quietly making people unwell - and a whole "nightshade-free" movement has grown up around avoiding them.

It's a topic where strong opinion has badly outrun solid evidence. So let's do it properly, and evenhandedly: what nightshades actually are, what's genuinely supported, what's myth, and how to find out whether they affect you specifically.

What nightshades actually are

"Nightshades" is the common name for the Solanaceae plant family - a large group of around 2,500 species.1 It's a genuinely diverse family: it includes everyday foods like tomato, potato, pepper (capsicum), aubergine (eggplant) and goji berry - and also tobacco and some toxic ornamental plants.

Like all plants, nightshades make natural compounds to defend themselves against insects and pests. Those defensive compounds are the entire basis of the nightshade worry - so it's worth knowing exactly which ones people mean.

The compounds at the centre of the worry

Two compound types come up.

Glycoalkaloids are the main one. These are natural compounds found across the Solanaceae family - potatoes mainly contain solanine and chaconine, and tomatoes contain a relative called tomatine.2 They're the plant's built-in pest defence.

Capsaicin is the second - the compound that makes chilli peppers hot.

Almost every claim about "nightshade intolerance" traces back to one or both of these. So the honest question is: what do they actually do?

The fiction: that nightshades drive inflammation and arthritis

The biggest claim - the engine of the whole nightshade-free movement - is that these foods worsen inflammation and trigger arthritis flares.

Here's the evenhanded truth. This has been debated for decades, and it remains exactly that: a debate. People who feel worse after eating nightshades genuinely believe they cause flares; many clinicians are sceptical; and there is, frankly, little solid scientific evidence on either side.1

What evidence does exist doesn't support the alarm. A Harvard Medical School rheumatologist puts it plainly: there is no convincing evidence that potatoes, tomatoes, or any specific individual foods worsen rheumatoid arthritis - and no scientific evidence that avoiding them improves it.3 The "solanine harms the gut" idea rests largely on decades-old animal studies - and more recent research in mice found the opposite, with some nightshades actually reducing inflammation. In any case, mouse studies translate poorly to humans.1

This needs care, because dismissing people isn't the goal. If you genuinely feel worse after nightshades, that experience is real and worth investigating. But "I feel worse" and "nightshades cause inflammation in everyone" are very different claims - and only the first is currently supported. The population-level "nightshades are inflammatory" story is, at present, not backed by good evidence.

The fact: glycoalkaloid toxicity is real - but it's a different issue

Now the part that is well-established - and it's important not to swing too far the other way.

Glycoalkaloid poisoning is genuine. Eat enough glycoalkaloid and it causes real, acute harm - principally gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Europe's food safety authority has assessed the risk and set a defined safety threshold below which adverse effects aren't observed.2

But notice what kind of problem this is. It's acute, dose-dependent toxicity - not a vague "inflammation" or a chronic "intolerance." And it's concentrated in a very specific place: glycoalkaloid levels are highest in green, sprouted, damaged or "eye" parts of potatoes.2 A green-tinged potato is signalling elevated solanine.

The genuine, evidence-based caution, then, is narrow and familiar: don't eat green or sprouted potatoes. That's ordinary food safety - the same advice your grandmother gave - not a reason to fear the entire nightshade family. And ordinary cooking helps: peeling and cooking potatoes meaningfully reduce their glycoalkaloid content.2 Ripe tomatoes, similarly, contain only trace amounts of tomatine - it's the green, unripe fruit and the leaves where it concentrates.

So glycoalkaloid toxicity is real, and it's a reason to handle potatoes sensibly. It is not evidence for a chronic "nightshade intolerance."

Capsaicin: the other accused compound

Capsaicin gets blamed too - and here the evidence is almost the reverse of the fear. There's no good evidence that eating peppers drives arthritis. In fact, topical capsaicin is a recognised, studied option for relieving joint pain - it works by depleting a pain-signalling chemical.1 The compound people are told to fear is, in another form, used to relieve pain.

The case for nightshades

It's worth completing the picture, because the nightshade panic skips it entirely: these are nutritious foods.

Several nightshades are nutritional assets. Peppers, for instance, are rich in antioxidants and are among the vegetables actively recommended within anti-inflammatory eating patterns.1 Doctors and dietitians generally advise against cutting nightshades for nutritional reasons - there's simply no general nutritional case for eliminating them.

So what should you do?

That last row is the practical one. Population evidence doesn't support "nightshades are inflammatory" - but people do vary, and it's entirely possible you react to a specific food that happens to be a nightshade. The answer to that uncertainty isn't a blanket lifetime ban. It's a proper individual test.

The recommended approach is a structured elimination-and-reintroduction: stop eating nightshades for about two weeks, then slowly bring them back, allowing roughly three days between each one, watching for any genuine, repeatable change.1 Test them as individual foods, too - "nightshades" isn't one thing, and reacting to, say, peppers tells you nothing about tomatoes. If a specific nightshade genuinely troubles you, that test will show it, and you can limit that food while keeping the rest. If it doesn't - which is the more likely outcome - you've cleared a whole group of nutritious foods and spared yourself a needless, lifelong restriction.

I'd gone completely nightshade-free for a year on the strength of a few articles - no tomatoes, no potatoes, no peppers. When I finally reintroduced them one at a time and actually tracked it, nothing happened. A year of restriction, and they were never my problem.

The goal: evidence over reputation

Nightshades are a textbook case of a food group with a reputation far worse than its evidence. For most people, tomatoes, potatoes (handled sensibly), peppers and aubergine are perfectly good foods - and several are genuinely nutritious. The one solid, evidence-based caution is the narrow and old one: don't eat green or sprouted potatoes.

The goal here is the one that runs through all sensible eating: not the narrowest diet driven by online fear, but clarity - eating as broadly as you comfortably can, having actually tested what affects you. Cutting an entire plant family on a contested theory has a real cost in nutrition and in the simple pleasure of eating, paid against a benefit the evidence doesn't promise.

If you do test and track, keep it light - a few seconds a day, enough to see a real pattern and a trend over time, not a project that takes over your meals. The point is to land on an answer and then get on with eating well.
