"It's probably just stress" - when food is actually the trigger
Stress genuinely affects the gut. But "just stress" is often the wrong word - and it stops people looking at food.
You describe your symptoms - the bloating, the unpredictable gut, the way you just feel off - and you hear it. From a friend, from a colleague, sometimes from a doctor after the tests come back clear, and often from yourself: "it's probably just stress."
And maybe you nod. But something doesn't quite fit - because it happens on calm days too, or it seems to follow certain meals. Here's how to think about that, fairly and accurately.
Stress is real - that part is true
Let's be clear up front: whoever said stress matters is not wrong. Stress genuinely affects the gut, and the science behind it is solid.
The gut and brain are in constant two-way communication - the gut-brain axis - so what happens in the mind reaches the gut directly.1 And the effects are concrete, not vague. Stress hormones scramble gut motility - slowing the stomach, speeding the colon. Stress measurably increases intestinal permeability, loosening the gut barrier through a mast-cell-driven mechanism.2 And chronic stress is a recognised driver of visceral hypersensitivity - the state in which the gut's nerves are turned up and normal sensations register as discomfort.34
The link is strong enough to be measurable: in one prospective study, having a chronic life stressor early in the study period strongly predicted how severe people's gut symptoms were more than a year later.5
So "stress affects your gut" is not a brush-off. It's real physiology. The problem isn't the claim. It's one small word attached to it.
But "just" is the wrong word
The problem word is "just."
"It's just stress" tends to get said at a particular moment - after tests come back normal, when there's no obvious disease to point at. And as a conclusion, it has two failures. First, it's rarely the whole story. Second, and more damaging, it quietly tells you to stop looking - including to stop looking at food.
A real explanation should open up the next step. "Just stress" usually closes it.
Why "just stress" gets said - and why normal tests don't mean nothing's wrong
It helps to understand why the phrase appears when it does. It almost always follows a normal test result - bloods fine, scope clear, scans unremarkable. With no structural disease to name, "stress" becomes the fallback explanation.
But here's the key point: a normal test does not mean nothing is wrong. Standard tests look for structural damage - inflammation, ulcers, growths. They are not designed to detect a gut that is malfunctioning without being damaged. And that distinction is now formal medicine: conditions like IBS are classified as disorders of gut-brain interaction - genuine, chronic gut dysfunction that exists precisely in the absence of structural disease.6
So a clear scan rules some things out - which is genuinely useful. What it does not do is prove the cause is "just stress." A malfunctioning gut-brain system, a food trigger, or both, can sit entirely invisible to a structural test. (We dig into this in your tests are normal but you still feel sick.)
Stress and food are not either/or
Here's the reframe that matters most: stress and food are not competing explanations. They work together.
Stress, on its own, doesn't usually conjure symptoms out of nothing. What it does is lower your threshold - it turns up visceral sensitivity and shrinks the headroom you have before symptoms start.3 Food then supplies the actual trigger, and food triggers are themselves cumulative and dose-dependent.7
Put those together and you get the pattern people find so confusing: the same meal is fine on a calm, well-slept day and a problem on a stressful one. A symptom blamed entirely on "stress" is, very often, food plus stress, stacked - the food did real work; the stress just removed the cushion. (This is also why the same food can affect you differently from one week to the next.)
The cruel part: being dismissed is itself stressful
There's a loop hidden in all of this that deserves naming.
Stress worsens gut symptoms. But living with unexplained gut symptoms - and being told they're "just stress" - is itself a significant source of stress. The worry, the unpredictability, the quiet sense that you're not believed, even the suggestion that you're somehow doing this to yourself: all of that is real stress, and it feeds straight back into the gut.
So "it's just stress," offered as a dismissal, can become a small self-fulfilling prophecy - it adds stress, which adds symptoms. Understanding this isn't just reassuring; it breaks the loop. A food-and-stress interaction is a mechanism, not a personal failing - and mechanisms can be worked with. That reframe alone takes some load off the system.
How to tell stress and food apart
You cannot disentangle stress and food by intuition - the only way is to track both, then look at what the patterns say:
- Symptoms that follow specific foods regardless of how stressed you are - food is doing genuine work, and it isn't "just" stress.
- Symptoms on genuinely calm, low-stress days - again, stress alone doesn't explain it.
- Symptoms that need both - a trigger food and a hard day together - this is the interaction, and it's the most common picture of all.
- Symptoms that track with stress and never with food - then, fairly, stress really is your main lever.
Notice that only one of those four outcomes makes "just stress" the right answer. The other three are missed entirely if you stop at it - and even in the fourth, knowing it for certain, from data, is far more useful than assuming it.
Why getting this right matters
This isn't a semantic quibble. If you accept "just stress" on faith, you might spend months trying to relax your way out of symptoms while eating your actual triggers every single day - and then blame yourself for "not managing stress well enough" when it doesn't work.
If you find the food component, you gain a concrete, controllable lever - which is its own kind of relief. And if it genuinely is mostly stress, you'll know that too, with evidence, and can put your energy where it counts. Either way, you replace a guess with an answer.
Finding your pattern
The fix is to track two things at once: food and symptoms, and a simple daily note on stress and sleep. With both in view, the food signal and the stress signal stop being tangled together - you can finally see which is doing what, and when they're combining.
For two years it was "just stress." Tracking food and stress side by side showed the truth: my flares needed both - a specific set of foods, on a badly-slept week. On calm weeks those same foods were fine. It was never just one thing.
